Cathy Polan has taken a leave as interim chief executive of the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), the organization confirmed Monday, as it begins searching for another leader in an acting capacity while continuing its recruitment for a permanent CEO.

It is understood from industry sources that Polan began a leave of absence at least one week ago. The circumstances surrounding Polan’s leave have not been made public, with OREA citing confidentiality.

REM has reached out to Polan for comment.

Two separate searches

Polan, a real estate agent based in Belleville, Ont., who stepped down as OREA president, became interim CEO following Luigi Favaro’s permanent departure. Favaro, who was appointed to the position in July 2025 after 17 years with the association, took a leave of absence in November 2025 and subsequently departed the organization.

Now, OREA’s board is set to seek out an acting CEO and a permanent CEO in two different search processes, the association confirmed to REM.

“The Ontario Real Estate Association board of directors will be engaging an executive search firm to assist in identifying a suitable candidate to assume the role of acting CEO while the current interim CEO is on leave,” said OREA president Kim Fairley in an email statement to REM.

“Once the board of directors has appointed an acting CEO, we will provide an update.”

OREA launched a formal search for a permanent CEO with leadership advisory firm Odgers at the end of June. The deadline for applications is July 24.

“OREA remains focused and diligent in our efforts to secure a permanent CEO for the association,” said Fairley.

‘Next phase of evolution’

Self-described as one of Canada’s largest professional associations representing 100,000 real estate professionals, OREA is entering a “pivotal chapter,” and needs someone in the CEO seat who can help the association “position itself for long-term sustainability in a rapidly evolving sector,” according to the job posting.

“Success in the role will be defined not only by advancing strategic priorities and financial sustainability, but also by building trust and fostering a high-performing, collaborative organizational culture,” reads the ad.
