Alberta advocates say renters need more help

This summer, Tim Kenny is set to complete a master’s degree of education at the University of Calgary. For a mature student, juggling a full-time job in Edmonton while undertaking a graduate program that takes him to many parts of southern Alberta wasn’t an easy feat. But having a landlord who kept rent increases to a minimum has enabled Mr. Kenny to further his career.

“I come from poverty,” says Mr. Kenny, who is of Indigenous lineage. “I grew up in community housing projects with a single mother here in Edmonton. So getting a step ahead with a university degree hasn’t been without taking on a lot of personal debt, or without personal risks.”
