Cinematographer’s Toronto home is modern, minimal and warm

Before Ante Cheng became an Emmy-nominated cinematographer, he grew up in the quiet, tree-lined Toronto neighbourhood of Cedarvale. It’s the kind of place where 1940s brick homes sit behind well-kept gardens, and kids play in leafy parks and winding ravines.
While Mr. Cheng’s career has taken him around the world – with extended stints in cities like Tokyo and Los Angeles – he never forgot where he came from. So when the opportunity came to film something in Toronto – Pachinko, the Korean epic streaming on Apple TV+ – he seized the chance to reconnect with his roots.
“Toronto still held a place in my heart,” Mr. Cheng says. “It’s peaceful, safe. I like the people, the food, the seasons. So I made up my mind to come home.”
